When the Dragonborn first reaches the town of Karthwasten, the townsfolk all appear to have gathered outside, split into two factions. Upon further investigation, the Dragonborn learns that a group of mercenaries, led by Atar, has been sent by the Silver-Bloods of Markarth. They are demanding that Ainethach, the owner of the mine, sign it over to them in return for the protection they provided in a prior attack by the Forsworn and are preventing the local miners from returning to work in the Sanuarach Mine until the rights to it are signed over to the Silver-Blood family.
The Dragonborn must then choose which side to help.
Convince Atar to leave Sanuarach Mine or Convince Ainethach to sell Sanuarach Mine[ | ]
Ainethach will ask the Dragonborn to convince Atar and his mercenaries to leave the mine, while Atar will offer to cut the Dragonborn in on the profits from the sale of the mine. Whichever side the Dragonborn decides to support, this will require persuasion, bribery or intimidation of the other leader to get them to go along with the chosen plan.

Once, done, it is simply of matter of reporting the news to the winning faction and collecting the reward, which is the same in either case.
