After the quest Under Saarthal, and after Tolfdir has returned to the college, if the Dragbonborn speaks with the instructor, the latter mentions that he has misplaced his alembic (again). The Dragonborn can then keep an eye out for it within the college and return it once found.
This quest can be undertaken multiple times as it appears the old man is constantly misplacing the item.
The alembic can be found in one of three locations in the Hall of Countenance:
- On a crate in one of the rooms on the ground floor.
- On top of a barrel on the top floor.
- Underneath one of the display cases in the enchanting room on the top floor.
